![]() ![]() It’s really an exploration of New Orleans’s landscape, and also the types of people and personalities and communities and cultures that it has created and has the potential to create. The narrative of the game is constructed in a way where the landscape takes primacy in many ways. The three acts of the game are in many ways slightly disparate, but they all do tie into the industrial landscape of the river parishes and the suburbs of western greater New Orleans, so Kenner and Metairie. It’s intended to be a composite look at not only the region in Louisiana, but also the Trump era. It has a lot of nontraditional gameplay elements. The game itself uses a lot of classic adventure-game tropes, but at its heart, it is more of an interactive piece of media. YUTS: I’m from Norco, grew up in Norco, went to UNO, lived in New Orleans up until about three years ago, when my partner accepted a job in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of Virginia. Yuts, can you tell us about yourself and the game Norco? ( courtesy of Geography of Robots/Raw Fury) Oil refineries loom large in Norco, as they do in the town for which it is named. ![]() The following is an edited transcript of that conversation. I asked Richard to join me for a conversation with Yuts to discuss what makes Norco such a compelling artistic subject. The town of Norco-or, rather, the petrochemical complexes lining the riverfront in Norco-also recently graced the cover of Enigmatic Stream: Industrial Landscapes of the Lower Mississippi River, by photographer Richard Sexton and published by THNOC. Norco, the video game that Yuts and the collective known as Geography of Robots created about his hometown of Norco, Louisiana (approximately 25 miles west of New Orleans), launched to critical acclaim in March, and has been billed by the game publishing platform Steam as “a Southern Gothic point-and-click narrative adventure that immerses the player in the sinking suburbs and verdant industrial swamps of a distorted South Louisiana.” Distinguished by its hauntingly gorgeous pixel artwork and engrossing storyline, Norco won the Tribeca Film Festival’s inaugural award for game design and has captivated gamers and non-gamers alike. Such was the case for the game developer and geographer known pseudonymously as Yuts. When these behemoths tower over your tiny hometown, though, you have little choice but to get acquainted, and perhaps even come to find beauty in this alien landscape. You’d be forgiven, however, for not really knowing what goes on here-or not wanting to find out. If you’ve driven the River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, or caught a glimpse of the flickering refineries off in the distance from I-10, you probably have a sense of the heavy industrial presence all along the lower Mississippi River. ( C ourtesy of Geography of Robots / Raw Fury ) Values above or below 100 represent above-average wealth or below-average wealth compared to the national level.Scene from Norco, a sci-fi adventure game based on the creator’s Louisiana hometown. The Wealth Index is based on a number of indicators of affluence including average household income and average net worth, but it also includes the value of material possessions and resources. The % of Income for Mortgage quantifies the percentage of median household income dedicated to mortgage payments on a home priced at the median value (assuming a 30-year mortgage and a 20% down payment).Values above 100 indicate increased affordability, while values below 100 indicate decreased affordability. The Housing Affordability Index base is 100 and represents a balance point where a resident with a median household income can normally qualify to purchase a median price home. ![]() An area's diversity index increases to 100 when the population is evenly divided into two or more race/ethnic groups. Some examples of amalgamated Polaroids from 1982 are Don & Christopher Nicholas Wilder Studying Picasso Still Life Blue Guitar Sun On The Pool and Patrick Procktor, London. He became so engrossed that for a while he kept his talent of painting aside. This was a discovery on his part, and he began experimenting. It was not in his mind to give this activity a planned composition, it just happened to be that everything harmonized in an unusual way, suggesting a sense of movement in the subject and the outcome narrated that the spectator moved around in the room. Once he was to paint a terrace and living room in Los Angeles, so he happened to make Polaroid images of the living area and later glued the photos together. The idea of joiners came to Hockney accidentally. While photographing, the subjects could move obviously if they were living things, otherwise Hockney moved the camera to photograph the scene or subject from various perspectives, parts and/or angles. These photomontages were done using a grid and even without it, to give a imprecise look. With this technique, he has made landscapes and portraits, such as Pearl Blossom Highway and Kasmin, respectively. The first subject of such work was his mother and since the photos were taken overtime – when joined together they gave a cubist feel. Hockney cleverly composed a patchwork of images. He used Polaroid photos and soon 35mm prints in color. In the 1980s, he began making photograph collages and he use to call them, joiners. Hockney made trips to Paris, Los Angeles and London.Īpart from painting, David Hockney was famous for his unique style of photography. A trip to California inspired Hockney to paint a series of swimming pools in acrylic, using vivid colors. There, he was included in Young Contemporaries, an exhibition that marked the arrival of Pop art in Britain. He completed his secondary education from Bradford College of Art and he finally attended the Royal College of Art, London. He went to Wellington Primary School, then to Bradford Grammar School. If bleeding continues, dab the wound with styptic or the paste you made, using a cotton ball.ģ. Meanwhile, speak to your pup reassuringly. Apply gauze to the wound, pressing firmly for 10 minutes. Have your helper stabilise your dog by hugging them or wrapping them in a blanket.Ģ. But, if you have all the right supplies, here's what to do. If you don't have a pet nail clipper, don't risk a catastrophe! Instead, bring your precious dog to a vet. Still, human nail clippers aren't strong enough to trim canine nails. The best design for dew claws is the "guillotine." I know, this term sounds awful, like you're executing the nails. Note that you must use a pet nail trimmer versus the human type. Just mix the powdery material with water to form a thick glob. If you don't have a styptic pencil, you can stop bleeding with a paste made of cornstarch, flour, or baking soda. If your pup won't tolerate a bandage, they may accept a comfy sock as wound protection. "What's up with the cotton sock?" you ask. If you fear getting nipped, apply a muzzle if you have one. Some pets withdraw, whimper, or cower, while others may growl or bite. Behaviours vary, according to a pup's temperament. If your dog is very sore, they may resist your help. A torn dew claw is loosely attached, and bleeding is minimal. The claw has completely broken off, accompanied by mild bleeding. The break in the nail occurs before the quick. Now that you've located the nail quick, you can proceed to the next step. To find them, examine the claws under bright light. Does your dog have dark nails? If so, their quicks are gray. If your dog has light-colored nails, you'll see a pink area within each one. The quick is living tissue, housing a blood vessel and nerve. GAUGING A MILD INJURYīy now, you may be wondering, "How can I treat my dog's broken nail at home?" Well, the first step is seeing if the break involves the nail "quick." This term means the shaded part inside the nail, closest to your dog's body. The most severe injury is a broken nail that's firmly attached. Generally, a ripped nail falls into three categories: Whether your dog has an injured toenail or dew claw, the distress signals are identical: Unlike canine toenails, dew claws are loosely attached, making them more susceptible to trauma. However, with canine evolution, the nails became obsolete. Originally, canines had catlike behavior, using their hind dew claws to climb trees. Hind dew claws were valuable for your dog's ancestors. Traction - for better footing on slippery surfaces.Gripping - aids grasping and chewing toys and bones.Grooming - helps with personal hygiene.Balance - when your pup treads uneven surfaces.Stability - after swimming, when a dog transitions from water to land.Front dew claws have various practical purposes: While these appendages look odd, they can be handy for your dog. Some dog breeds also have hind dew claws, including double nails.Ī healthy dew claw has a smooth surface and uniform colour. In others, it protrudes above the front paw. In some pups, it projects from the inner ankle. If the toenails look fine, assess the " dew claws." It depends on the nail's location, position, and how much is severed. In many cases, you can treat a damaged claw at home. Since it's so common, vets have outlined an orderly way to take charge of the situation. Canines of all ages are prone to this type of calamity. Upon seeing the blood and your cutie in pain, your first impulse may be rushing to an animal hospital. Realising your dog's nail has ripped off can send you into a tailspin. ![]() ![]() ![]() They have stories of meeting one another at castings or shoots, and connecting via DM, less competitive than one-for-all, and all-for-Brawn. But he began booking jobs, in a way he never did as an actor he’d said “tens of lines on television,” in his estimation, but was generally told by casting directors his size would make his prime years 50 and over and he made the better part of his living odd-jobbing. Miko and IMG got rafts of good press but whether it would translate to actual work was an open question. The Brawn division was more or less a guess. “Is there a market for that? I didn’t know anything about it - even though I’m a big and tall guy.” (It was Bart who discovered Miko, on Instagram.) “At first, it caught me off guard,” says Josh Stephens, whom Bart deputized to run the Brawn division. The onrushing tide of body positivity, with its push for inclusivity and representation in advertising and media, had already raised the profiles of curvy female models - Graham appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for the first time that year - and IMG Models president Ivan Bart made a bet that men could follow. When he was signed to IMG in 2016, Miko was the first (and at that point, only) model in the company’s new Brawn division, which aimed to elevate the careers of plus-size male models the way it already did for their plus-size female counterparts, like Ashley Graham and Candice Huffine.
